Dressing as a couple can be hard at times. You both have different styles and still try to coordinate with each other and create a cute couple outfit. On Social Media we always see those couples that just get it and look perfect together (#couplegoals), but in reality you ask yourself why your girlfriend or boyfriend shows up in joggers, and you are all dressed up.
Firstly we want to talk about how to have a conversion on style in a relationship, but we also have some tips for you, on how to master your style as a fashionable couple.
Talking about fashion as a couple
1. Communicate on what the occasion you are dressing for
This sounds really simple at first, but a “what are you going to wear” could oftentimes be the answer to your problem. When you both are still figuring out, which restaurant to go to, the one could dress for a casual McDonald’s meal, while the other has the fancy Italian restaurant in mind. The outcome stylewise will probably be very different. So before you meet up, just ask, and you can be sure that the general vibe fits and your outfits as a couple match.
2. Be polite with your fashion critique
While superficial characteristics shouldn’t play a huge role in your partnership, it could be disturbing at times, when you’re just not feeling the style of your significant other. One thing you should never forget is, that the style of a person can be a very individual thing and maybe even a sensitive topic. And as always, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. If you can’t deal with your partner’s style whatsoever, you should still be able to talk about it frankly. Just remember that you’re not Anna Wintour and everyone has the right to wear what they want. Be open and start the conversion, but never try to force anything on somebody.
3. Go shopping together
What easier way than giving your opinion right before they buy something. If you are struggling to come to an agreement with your partner on what clothing works for them, you should just make it a fun date and go shopping together. Rather than criticizing the other person, you can search for alternatives instead. It will also come across way less offensive if you say that something doesn’t fit them quite right before they actually buy it. When you both are into fashion, this will be a fun activity, and you can always get dinner afterward. This of course also works with online shopping. Browse together and try on the pieces together at home.
Matching outfits as a couple
While you probably thought that matching your outfits is a bit cringe and involves ugly hoodies with some sort of prompt on them, we have something different for you. Actually coordinating your style with your girlfriend or boyfriend can look elegant, sophisticated and cool. We show you how and give you different levels to work through together.
Level 1: Match your general vibe in your couple outfits
This is probably the easiest way to start matching your outfits as a couple. For some people it might come natural, that they have a similar style to their partner, both sporty or maybe both classic. But if the styles are more different from each other, it could look a bit weird. In that case, you should follow our tips and try to match after you cleared your differences. This will definitely lead to compromise on both sides, but could also be a way to elevate your own style through discovering a bit of a new path. And generally you don’t have to change your whole style, but rather parts of it.
Level 2: Coordinate colors and fabrics in your couple outfits
Once you two connect on your general style, you can go even one step further. One way to look like a unit stylewise is to wear similar colors and fabrics. The way through materials is really easy. One wearing a corduroy pant, the other one some kind of corduroy jacket. It could be in completely different colors, but will still pull your looks together. The route through wearing matching colors is a bit harder, but can be achieved even through similar colors. If both focus pieces on each person is in blue tone, for example, it can look very put together. A perfect way to not make it cringe is coordinating the upper half of the outfit from the one person with the bottom part of the other partner. With that approach, it won’t seem too obvious, but will create a harmonious and perfect matching couple outfit.
Level 3: Get full on matching couple outfits
This is the real masterclass of dressing as a couple: Getting matching outfits. You have to be careful here, because we don’t want you to look like Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake in their jeans look from 2001. The easiest way to achieve a look like that is to go to the same designer, as they often use the same fabrics and therefore patterns and colors in their collection regardless of the gender. With those pieces, you can go as striking as you want. If you only get one piece each from a particular collection, it definitely won’t look forced in any way. But for the real fashion influencers, we suggest that you two go all the way and get the whole look, like we show you in our second recommendation. Either way, it will be a fun look for a couple.
With our tips, you and your partner will soon be the most fashionable couple around. In this article, we referred to heterosexual relationships, but we of course do not want to discriminate against other forms of partnerships. We at casual-closet support all forms of love! We hope you enjoy our suggestions!
